Although most Australian birds are completely harmless, the
most commonly known pest species throughout the Sydney metropolitan area are the
Pigeon, Sparrow, Minor bird and Starling.
Building nests within your home or
workplace whilst bringing along with them mites or lice, they begin to cause
various problems within your home or workplace and are even capable of
threatening your health. Birds can start by building cavaties in the roof
or in the gutters. If left unchecked these nests can become fire hazards in the
summer. |
The most commonly gained
route of entry for the bird to enter your home or office is - under broken
ridge capping, under roof tiles, in valleys, drain hole pipes, vents and
chimneys. Common areas for roosting within your home or office may include down
pipes, exposed ledges, window sills, verandahs, air-conditioning units, carparks
and garages to name a few.
Some birds nest in situations such as guttering and down piping
which then causes water overflow and moisture problems in the walls. There
faeces also reduces the normal flow of water in guttering, causing corrosion in
some types of metal guttering. Did you know that a gap as small as a fifty cent
piece is all that is needed for these pest birds to gain entry.
| Histoplasmosis, cryptococcosis and aspergillosis are fungus
diseases in bird droppings and the spores from these become airborne and inhaled
by those nearby. These diseases produce symptoms in humans similar to influenza
but can develop into more serious illnesses in susceptible people or those with
reduced immunity. To keep your family safe, it is recommended that a house
inspectation is done reguarly for any pests that may be lurking within your
property. |
 |
The food poisoning bacterium “Salmonella” can also be contracted
by humans from bird droppings.
Birds frequently become pests, and control measures must be
taken to relieve the many pest problems created by their presence. The purpose

Bird Mites
|
(Bird Mite) Ornithonyssus Bursa
|
Bird Mites are very minute creatures barley visible to the
naked eye but are an extremely mobile mite, measuring 0.1-2.0mm in length, oval
in shape and with a sparse covering of short hairs.
Bird mites are semi
transparent in color, which makes them difficult to detect on the skin until
blood in ingested and then digested this is when they may appear reddish to
blackish.
The bird mite is a parasite feeding on the blood of birds.
Bird mites have unsegmented abdomens and 4 pairs of legs in the adult stage.
The development of a mite involves an egg, larval, nymphal and adult
stage. The larvae have only 3 pairs of legs, the nymphs and adults have 4 pairs.
The life cycle usually occupies approximately 7 days but within these 7 days
they are capable of reproducing an extremely large population. Birds being the
host for the bird mites are a common pest to the human particularly in the
spring and summer months. Bird mites can be avoided with a simple pest
inspection. |
The infestation of the
bird mites within your home or workplace begins as the birds begin to build
their nest or after the babies have left the nest as this then leaves the bird
mites often many thousands of them with no host or food leading the bird mites
to search for a new host and food. The materials used for the birds nest
provides an ideal environment for the bird mites to thrive.
When the mite is searching for a new host they begin biting the
human. When the mite bites it injects its saliva at the same time leading to a
severe irritation causing rashes, inflammation and intense itching. Due to the
intense itching this can then lead to a secondary infection. Usually the common
complaint for humans with bird mites within the home or workplace is the
discomfort of the bird mites bite causing intense irritation and also the
sensation of crawling mites on the skin. However the problem of bird mites
within the home or office will persist while the bird related source of the
mites remain.
The bird mite does not live under the skin of a
human and nor is the bird mite linked with any transmittable disease.
With Forensic Pest Management Services knowledge and expertise we will
happily come to your home or workplace and correctly identify the mite and once
identified appropriate steps are taken to locate the source of the infestation
and prevent its recurrence. Forensic Pest Management Services will locate all
nesting sites and remove all nesting materials.
We will then apply an
insecticidal spray to ensure total eradication of the mites, but treatment of
rooms without the removal of nests in roof cavities will not stop further mites
entering and thus your bird mite problem will persist. Forensic Pest Management
Services also recommends that all broken tiles or timber allowing access to roof
cavities should be repaired and all potential entry points to the eaves and roof
cavity be blocked. Roosting and nesting sites on window ledges should also be
cleared or proofed and be made inaccessible for future bird use.
