Termites Control & Termite Inspection

Of all the pests that enter your home the most unwanted is the subterranean termite.

Each year termites damage more homes than both fire and storms combined.

Did you know that 1 in 3 homes have active termites or a history of termite activity? and more alarming is that there is no insurance that will cover you for their damage.

As termites forage for food below the soil, they often gain access to a home from the sub floor area, slab edge or timber structure attached to the house. This is why it is therefore essential that every household owner have a timber termite inspection carried out at least every 6 to 12 months and a termite control management program in place.

Termite Classification

Termites, usually called “White Ants” do not truly resemble a true ant apart from their social habitat of living in colonies.

Termites are mostly pale brown to white, have no constriction between thorax and abdomen, and have beaded antennae. Reproductive forms have two pairs of equal wings and one pair of compound eyes.  Termite Workers and soldiers are blind, sexless and wingless and have thin cuticles that are susceptible to desiccation in dry or exposed environments.

Ants on the other hand, vary from brown to black depending on the species and have no obvious constriction between the thorax and abdomen.

Termite Colonies

Termites live in colonies, which are a collection of different individuals with specific functions or tasks. The size of the colony varies from a few hundred to hundreds of thousands or even millions. Some species build mounds, some nest underground and some live in small colonies in the wood of trees.

In Australia the Subterranean termite can be found throughout mainland Australia. They prefer the warmer climates of NSW (Sydney) and upwards throughout Queensland.

Contained within the Subterranean colony are three (3) termite casts:

termite soldiers

termite workers

The Soldiers

The Queen Termite

The Workers

The termite soldier has a brown head and white body with tong like jaws used for protecting the colony, and measures up to 12mm. The queen termite with a life span of up to 20 years lies in centre of the colony never to be seen outside of the colony and is capable of reproducing up to 1000 eggs per day!

The termite workers are responsible for feeding the queen termite and building the colony and measures up to 6mm. Throughout certain times of the year termites take flight from the colony, the winged forms of termites are the future queens.

After mating the queen termite begins to establish a new colony preferring ideal conditions of dampness and warmth to establish her colony this makes termites an all year round problem.

Any termite that is sighted should be seen by a professional pest controller straight away to prevent serious damage. Contact Forensic Pest Management Services for a termite inspection today or a termite control solution. Did you know that within a 3 month period termites can attack up to a quarter of your averaged size home!

Termites being the most destructive of all wood infesting pests attack timber as they feed mainly on a substance called “cellulose” a major component of the timber.
Due to the termites continuously feeding from the timber this then leads to the complete destruction of the timber.

It is important to note that a steel framed structure is not safe from termite attack. A CSIRO study found that brick and steel framed structures are equally at risk from termite attack as termites will attack other cellulose based materials contained within that structure such as window frames, timber doors and skirting boards.

Forensic Pest Management Services is licensed through workcover- the state governing body of Pest Control within New South Wales (Throughout Sydney). We have a commitment to our customers to provide effective control of your termite problems, without disruption to your normal home life and with the utmost consideration of the health and safety of you and the environment we share and enjoy with our family, friends and pets.

What is involved in termite control :

We only use those chemicals that are considered to have the lowest toxicity and the most environmentally friendly available which enables the break down of the chemical under normal environmental conditions. All of Forensic Pest Management Services termite treatments are carried out in strict accordance to the Australian Standard AS3660-2000.
The required chemicals and baiting systems for termite elimination are not for sale to the public and must be used only by a fully licensed and trained professional under strictly controlled conditions. Here at Forensic Pest Management Services we are licensed and trained in the use of these chemicals and baiting systems.

Termite chemical barriers are installed by creating a trench along all foundation walls, piers and pipes and chemical is then applied to these trenches. Any concrete areas abutting to the structure are drilled and then chemical is injected into the soil under the concrete continuing the barrier. This liquid chemical barrier works for termite control, as termites are "subterranean" meaning they travel through the ground and penetrate the ground surface gaining entry into your structure by creating a mud trail up the foundations. By protecting the foundations termites will die when coming into contact with the chemical barrier. The termite chemical barrier is recommended to be reapplied every (5) years to ensure maximum protection to your property.

Termite baiting/ monitoring systems are also another method of termite control. Baiting for termites is used to achieve nest elimnation and is installed as an alternitive to applying a termite chemical barrier. Termite baiting/ monitoring systems are also used in areas where a termite chemical barrier is not able to be installed. Termite inground bait stations are installed every (2) to (3) metres around your structure. These inground stations allow for early detection of termites foraging through the ground within the vicinity of your structure. As part of your baiting program above ground bait stations are installed to the active termites to start the baiting process, once the termites start to consume the bait they then take the bait back to the colony. Bait is re applied until we have achieve colony elimation.

When building a new structure or extending / renovating an exsiting structure termite control should be carried out, as termites may enter into any structure old or new. This is why we also offer physical barriers and reticulation systems that can be installed at the time of construction as a preventative termite control method.

As no property can ever be totally safe from termite attack a six (6) monthly maintenance program is recommended to continue with Forensic Pest Management’s service warranty. A full termite inspection of the property must be carried out and a written report is given notifying the client on the conditions of the sub floor, roof void and interior timbers for the presence of termites. The report also notifies of timber fence condition, sub floor moisture and ventilation and any other points that may be conducive to termite attack.

Below are some of the most common causes of termite attack to homes and some hints on how to minimize termites eating your valuable asset away from you!

  1. The closer that the house is to the ground the higher the risk of termite attack.
  2. The higher the exterior soil levels are the greater termite risk. Therefore if the exterior ground levels, pavers, paths or gardens are above the slab level the termite risk is exceptionally high. It is recommended that structures with a concrete floor construction must have at least 50mm to 75mm of the slab edge exposed to allow termite entry to be detected when carrying out a termite inspection.
  3. Contrary to popular belief, concrete slab constructions are far more susceptible to termite attack than suspended timber flooring homes built off the ground, as termites may enter over the slab edge virtually undetected.
  4. Ineffective or poor drainage, leaking or broken pipes under and around a structure can be a attractive invite to your property, drainage and pipes should be checked as part of the maintanance of your home.
  5. The more alterations/extensions a house has the greater the risk of consealed termite entry due to joints between concrete slabs, engaged piers, foundation walls abutting together etc.
  6. The more moisture there is in or around the house the greater the risk of termites. Improving sub floor ventilation can play a major part in reducing the risk of termite attack.

If you find you do have termites or you think you may have termites do not disturb them, contact us immediately to deal safely and professionally with these pests.

When treating for termites the main goal is to try and locate and destroy the nest, if the termites are disturbed this opportunity may be lost resulting in further termite damage and a more costly treatment.
